Overview

Kollam or Quilon, an old seaport town on the Malabar Coast, had a sustained commercial reputation from the days of the Phoenicians and the Romans. A famous port of international spice trade in ancient India, the present day Kollam is famous for its varied modern industries including cashew nut processing and research, fisheries, etc. Its association with the renowned Ashtamudi Lake makes it the gateway to the magnificent backwaters of Kerala. The eight-hour boat trip between Kollam and Alappuzha is the longest and most exhilarating experience on the backwaters of Kerala. The place is also home to relics of the past and a number of temples built in the traditional ornate architectural style.

Thenmala, which lies at the conjunction of the Kollam-Shencottah road and the Trivandrum-Shencottah Road, boasts of India’s first planned Ecotourism destination. It has 10 Ecotourism spots that cover the great hill ranges of Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts. ‘Thenmala’ translates to ‘Honey Hill’ and so it is no surprise that high quality honey is exported from this area. The surrounding dense forest is also known for the timber that is in much demand across the country. Its terrain is dotted by forests, rubber and tree plantations and was selected by the World Tourism Organisation as one of the premier eco-friendly projects in the world.

Ponmudi is among the best ways to spend time in the city. Families and friends alike are known to go on long drives up the winding paths for a view they insist rivals any other in the State. The slopes shrouded in mist fill one with a feeling of wonder and amazement. A large amount of rare flora and fauna can be seen here including mountain flowers, wild orchids and exotic butterflies.

Check-out & Departure towards ponmudi, Visit Jatayu Earth Center, also known as Jatayu Nature Park or Jatayu Rock, is a park and tourism centre at Chadayamangalam. It stands at an altitude of 350m (1200ft) above the mean sea level. Jatayu Nature Park holds the distinction of having the world’s largest bird sculpture, which is of Jatayu. Visit Kottukkal Cave Temple, also known as Kaltrikkovil in Malayalam, is an existing example of rock cut architecture, built between 6th and 8th centuries CE. There are two caves of unequal size, both facing the east with the sculpture of the main deity Ganapathy in between. Reaching Ponmudi. Overnight stay @ Ponmudi.
Ponmudi (the Golden Peak) also known as Kashmir of Kerala, located at an altitude of 1,100 m (3,600 ft). Ponmudi is one of the popular honeymoon destinations in South India. Some notable tourist attractions located in Ponmudi are Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, Echo Point and various trekking spots. Mist-laden valleys, especially Golden Valley near Kallar River, also draw tourists. Travelers can find a deer park and wood and stone cottages coloured in bright hues. Ponmudi Falls, Deer Park, Meenmutty Falls, are other tourist attractions of the region. A variety of wild animals and birds like Asian elephants, sambar, leopards, lion-tailed macaques, Malabar grey hornbills, etc. can be seen in Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary.
Check-out and proceed for Kulathupuzha Sastha Temple. The idol at Kulathupuzha is called ‘Manikandan’. It is believed that the Temple was constructed by the Raja of Pandalam. Visit Sanjeevani Vanam (A Medicinal Garden) Sanjeevani Vanam Medicinal garden at Kulathupuzha is one of the best and prestigious enterprises of the Kerala Forest Department. Visitors can relax under the cool pleasant atmosphere prevailing in the area. About 400 species of medicinal plants and trees are conserved and maintained in this garden. Most of the species are rare, endangered and having utmost medicinal value. If time permits visit Ottakkal Vier, The irrigation can of the Kallada. Two canals namely the left bank and the right bank commences from this vier. A watch tower enables the vistors to have a panoramic view of the landscape. Visit Pandavan Para, The place takes the name from the legendary Pandavas, as described in the great Indian epic 'Mahabharata'. Pandavan Para or the Rock of the Pandavas, located at Urukunnu, near Thenmala in Kollam District is an ideal picnic spot. Along the trek, from various vantage points one can have splendid views of different sections of Thenmala like the adjoining hills, forests, the Kallada Dam and the lake behind it and the railway line that passes by the mountain bases and over arched stone bridges. As the climb reaches the top, you find a rocky outcrop, with two pedestal rocks on the northern side and a temple towards the south. Visit Pathimoonnu Kannara Bridge (13 Arch Bridge). The bridge, sandwiched by the Kollam - Senkottai National Highway at one side and the River Kazhuthurutti on the other, offers a visual fete at a length of 102.72 meters and 5.18 metres height. The bridge was built on 13 arches. This Bridge holds one of India's oldest mountain rails enroots to Thenmala - Aryankavu. Proceed to Thenmala Eco-Tourism. Check out and visit Palaruvi Waterfalls, which literally translates to ‘Stream of Milk’, comes down through rocks from a height of 300 feet. This has turned into a delightful picnic spot where one can enjoy a spectacular view uninterrupted. The rocky terrain one has to traverse before reaching it can be cumbersome but once these majestic waterfalls come into sight, any kind of fatigue disappears immediately. Proceed to Rosemala, Nestled amidst the pretty pristine woods of Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary, Rosemala is a well kept secret of Kerala. The valley appears the unfurling petals of a rose, hence the name. Boasting of panoramic vistas of the gorgeous surroundings, the major attractions of the place are the beautiful woods, a watch tower and the lake. Visit Aryankavu, The Ayyappa Temple or Sree Darma Sastha Temple at Aryankavu is one among the four most important temples dedicated to Lord Ayyappa in Kerala. End of a Great Tour!
