Overview

Mahanadi is a region between Tondai Nadu and Karnataka which was called Mazhavarnadu. This region falls under the great ancient dynasty called Chera Dynasty. It includes the Districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri. In the ancient Sangam age, this region was ruled by Mazhavar King Kolli Mazhavan. Famous Sangam poetess Avvaiyar had a cordial relationship with the Mazhavar chieftains like Athiyamān Nedumān Añci of Thagadoor and Valvil Ori of Kollimalai.Mazhanadu was divided into two major divisions namely Mel-Mazhanadu (Western Mazhanadu)and Keezh Mazhanadu (Eastern-Mazhanadu). The Keezh-Mazhanadu was once ruled by Kolli Mazhavan and his successors. The Keezh-Mazhanadu was well known for its water resources. It was mentioned in a Tamil poem.

Yercaud is situated at an altitude of 4970 feet, on the Shevaroys Hills of the Eastern Ghats, located in Salem District of Northern Tamil Nadu. Because of the abundance of trees that happened to be near the Lake made the locals called this area as Yeri – Kaadu meaning Lake Forest. Later on, the name turned out to be YERCAUD and it is also called Jewel of the South. Bison, Deer, Rabbits, Hares, Foxes, Mongoose, Squirrels, Partridges, Snakes, Bulbuls, Kites, Sparrows, Swallows and the Bird of Paradise form the Wild Life habitats of the Yercaud region. The Yercaud Lake is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Yercaud. It is providing stunning, panoramic views of the hills and lush green lawns of this hill station. The 32-Km Loop Road is a 32 kilometre stretch, which begins from Yercaud Lake and takes one through the much-appreciated roads and plantations of Yercaud. Lady’s seat is a viewpoint that overlooks the winding ghat road and offers a spectacular view of Salem City. Mudumalai Murugan Temple: The 146ft Murugan statue is taller than the Pathumalai Murugan statue (140 ft height) in Malaysia. It is the world's tallest Murugan statue. Aragalur Bairavar Temple: Ashta Bhairavar icons installed at Aragalur are : Asitanga, Kala, Kapala, Krodha, Rudra, Ruru, Samhara & Unmatta. Sri Thanthondreeswarar Temple is at Belur. The temple was built by the Cholas kingdom in the 12th century AD. Thanthondreeswarar Temple is located on the banks of Vasishta Nadi (Vasishta River). The temple has a serene atmosphere and is surrounded by beautiful hillocks. The Kalrayan Hills are a major range of hills situated in the Eastern Ghats of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kalrayan Hills in Salem District has tourist attractions Anaimaduvu Reservoir, Kariyakoil Reservoir, Horticulture Farm, Kunnur, Nagalur Falls, Kariyaraman Temple, etc. Anaimaduvu Reservoir (Puluthikuttai Dam) & Kariyakoil Reservoir (Pappanaickenpatty Dam) Apart from the Mettur dam, These 2 dams are important in Salem District. Both are built in the Kalvarayan Ranges of Eastern Ghats and are picturesque and ideal Natural spots in the foothills of the Mighty Kalvarayan Range. Nagalur Waterfalls: One can view the waterfalls from the top view. This Viewpoint is a vertical cliff which offers an exquisite view of Attur Town and the valley. Kunnur: Highest village in Kalvarayan Hills. With abundant coffee & Pepper Plantations, it is an ideal spot for Nature Lovers. Perumal Temple near Kunnur is the highest place in the Entire Kalvarayan Hills (approx 1300 above MSL).
Kolli Hills is a greenish mountain range located in Namakkal District with the highest hairpin pin bends (70 bends) in Asia. It is about 1300m in height. Kolli Hills is rich with medicinal value plants and trees. The mountain is a famous tourist place where people can explore the beauty of nature as well as the cool climate. Arappaleeswarar Temple is an ancient temple built by the Chola dynasty within the famous Kolli Hills of Tamil Nadu. It is considered as a popular place of worship for Lord Shiva all over South India. Agaya Gangai Waterfalls: One has to climb down the 1000-odd steps along the mountain edge leading to the waterfalls. Siddhar Caves An age-old home for ascetics, the Siddhar Caves of Kolli Hills, Tamil Nadu are sacred and serene. Kolli Pavai (Ettukkai Amman) Temple is an ancient temple. Ettukai Amman also called Kollipaavai is the main deity of this temple. The Mountains are named Kolli Malai behind the name of Goddess Ettukkai Amman (Kolli Paavai), the local deity. Selur Viewpoint One of the highest points in the hills is Selur Nadu, which is believed to be the place where King Pari Ruled. Masila Falls is a medium-sized waterfall that is a popular destination for families holidaying together due to its visually appealing nature. The falls are 200 feet in height. Seekuparai View Point "Seekkuparai is one of the best viewpoints in Kolli Hills. The FOREST DEPARTMENT has developed this View Point. Namma Aruvi is a small waterfall. It’s a great place for hiking and trekking, so if you are in search of a good adventure, this is a great place to be. It is also a great place for photography. The Botanical Garden is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Kolli Hills. It features a beautiful rose garden, eco-friendly cottages, a majestic viewpoint, and also a Children’s Park. Vasalurpatty Boat House The pleasant lake is surrounded by the vibrant green landscape of the hills which makes it one of the most wonderful experiences in Kolli Hills.
Namagiri Amman Temple It is situated within the temple complex of the Narasimha Swamy kovil. The sculptural works of the temple exhibit influence of the Pallava and Chalukya art. Namakkal Anjaneyar temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Hanuman. The image of Anjaneyar is 18 ft (5.5 m) tall, making it one of the tallest images of Hanuman in India. The Agamam is followed by “Sri Vaikhanasam”. Arthanareeswarar temple Tiruchengode The Arthanareeswarar Temple is located on a hill. The presiding deity is depicted as half-male and half-female, vertically to represent Shiva and Parvati worshipped as one form. It is considered one of the oldest temples in this region. Namakkal Fort The Rock Fort in Namakkal is a special feature of the Town. The Fort covers an area of one and a half acres of a flat surface and is accessible from the South-West by a flight of narrow steps. Jedarpalayam Dam This Dam is having a water storage area for boating. Sangagiri Fort is a historical fort maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It has 12 fort walls built on and built by the British. It was an important military base for Tippu Sultan and later for the British army. Built across the River Cauvery at the canyon, Mettur Dam was built in the year 1943 and is a sight of sheer beauty. The dam is surrounded by verdant hills and picturesque natural beauty and is quite popular among tourists. It is the largest dam in Tamil Nadu.
Theerthamalai: It is an important and sacred temple; Theerthagiriswarar temple located here can be reached by the one Km steep trekking path. There are five springs around the temple and hence this place is called Theerthamalai. Hanumantirtham: Hindu God Hanuman was said to have thrown down the vessel in which he brought the holy water and this spilt water makes the shrine ‘Hanumantirtham’. Pambaaru Dam: The Dam is located 4 km away from Uthangarai and one can take a short break and unwind like Paambaru [river]. Hogenakal Falls: It is a majestic and beautiful waterfall from an altitude of 750 ft. It is 46 km from Dharmapuri with Melagiri Hills in its backdrop. Cauvery, one of the major and perennial rivers of India flows through this town. Some even call it Niagara of India. It is a perfect visual Treat with gushing Cauvery and lush green hilly areas. The waterfall rushes through many medicinal herbs and shrubs. Bathing underneath gives a refreshing feeling and also cures many diseases. Melagiri Hills: (Anchetty) After having seen the breathtaking falls, the next most attractive place in Hogenakkal is the Melagiri Hills. The Hills are a few km away and various trekking options up to the hill add to the thrill of finally seeing the ranges. With two mountain ranges converging from both sides and dense forests all around the place, the view is simply sublime. You can also spot one-horned antelopes in these valleys. Aiyur Eco Tourism Park: Eco Tourism Park is located 1060 mts above sea level in the Eastern Ghats region. Here we can find out bamboo cottages, heritage cottages, modern cottages and dormitories, modern watch towers, tree top watch towers. Children's playgrounds, gardens artificial waterfalls are the main attraction of the park. Green valley views are sunai parai, and kodikarai. Evergreen cool forest (shola forest) name we call it as “Allal Thoppu”. Trees like Allal and Naki companied together and spread shield like shelter sunlight unable to penetrate this shelter this forest region always cool and chill throughout the year. Krishnagiri Dam: It is built across the Thenpennai River and the dam irrigates thousands of acres of land. To make it a tourist attraction and picnic spot, exotic landscaping and a children’s park maintained by the Public Works Department of the State are in place there. Kelevarapalli Dam: The Kelevarapalli Dam 10 km from Hosur is on the Ponnaiyar River when it enters from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu.Thally: It is known as "Little England" because of its cool climate like that of England. The area is covered by several valleys and cliffs. Chandra Choodeswarar Temple: It is a temple dedicated to Lord Siva called as Chandra Choodeswara located on a Hillock. It is frequently visited by pilgrims from Karnataka. There is a Children’s park nearby and also an observatory established and operated by the Tourism Department. Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary and an elephant reserve situated in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the only sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh with a population of Asian elephants. Kalyana Revu WaterFalls (also called Kalyan Drive Falls) is a waterfall located to the North of Palamaner in the Chittoor district of India in the Koudinya Wildlife Sanctuary. Kaigal Waterfalls is a waterfall located to the west of Palamaner in the Chittoor district of India in the Koudinya Wildlife Sanctuary. It lies between Palamaner and Kuppam national highway.
